Dana reports from Zandra's California trip. So far Zandra has had a great time visiting the Grand Canyon, and went shopping on Rodeo Drive. 

Bill is beyond happy for leaving the hospital after a tick related illness health scare. 

Sarah is back from her family trip to Hawaii as it is the 49th state for her family to visit. She celebrate's her daughter Julia’s state track results, with new school record for the 4 x 800 relay for 2nd place. Both the winners and Julia's team broke an existing state record. It has been a very successful track season for the entire team. She’s glad to be back.

Brent has gratitude for the help from the team for the help during his term as president.  He values the commitment to the club which has meant a lot to him this year.

10k Update

Ticket Sales 100 have been sold of the 250. Please push out the QR code for the form. We have a little over a month to go.

Silent Auction items, 2 destination locations have been confirmed, asks if we know of anyone with a business, or services. Let Sarah know if you have contacts who have services or items for the silent auction.

Frolic Update:

Dave said things went super well, there was sufficient staff to man and serve the burger stand, kudos to the people who were there for the clean up. He’s waiting for an overall report. Our club sold all our Summer Frolic raffle tickets.

Library Fence painting update. Dave helped fix some of the repairs needed, and Gary is working on getting estimates for the materials for the repairs.

Celebrate the End of our 87th year and International Asteroid Day with a party on the patio at Norsk Golf Clubhouse 6/30 starting at 5:30. Event will be rain or shine. Outreach invites our members, family, and interested parties to come

Help Spread Awareness of Our Club's Brand. Gary has reached out to Minute Man Press for embroidery work to help get our club’s branding for $11. Members can Allow 1 week for turnaround. Steve Salerno offered to bring shirts if we want to bring our items to next week’s meeting.

There is an opportunity for smaller clubs to have a TriCon-like experience without the expense. The event would include smaller local clubs in Oregon, Stoughton, Fitchburg, Verona, and Mt. Horeb. Ed Futa, former United Nations representative, will be speaking about Rotary mission and vision. Event will take place 8/20 at 4:30 at the Thirsty Goat in Fitchburg. The club will contribute funds to cover attendance.

Guest Speaker Jessica Gretzinger, Library Director, presented on Literacy and the Library. The library's mission statement is to welcome everyone to explore the library. Some takeaways regarding literacy rates include:

54% of US adults read below the 6th grade level. This affects economic growth, civic engagement and opportunities.

36 million adults in the US cannot read, write, or do basic math above the 3rd grade level.

It is important for adults to keep reading as it affects student achievement in households who struggle with literacy.

Daily reading for pleasure has declined more than 40% over the past 10 Years. TV viewing, family structure, and smartphones had changed civic engagement.

Our library is open 61 hours a week. There are over 65k items inside. There are 53k books with the ability to share more through the county library system of 54 branches. Free access to digital books, Libby (a digital platform), Overdrive, audio books on DVD’s. Digital use has increased 5% last year.

The library has a new email notification system with blasts every 2 weeks featuring updates of new materials to help you get on the “hold” list. Visit the library website and subscribe to the email list.

Library cards get deleted if inactive for 2 years. Jessica reminds us to come by and check items out to keep cards active. The library offers study rooms and meeting rooms, access to computers and WiFi. Programming includes weekly story time sessions, folder music sessions, early release programs, summer reading programs, and adult educational programs

There are several donation options. Support can go directly to Library operating fund, Endowment fund, Library building expansion fund, legacy and estate planning, Friends of the MH Library which is a a separate entity that supports the library.

This year’s goals is to increase card holders, an engagement with events such as the Deliberation Dinner with Disagree Better, an initative through the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy. The deliberation dinner brings together people with different viewpoints having discussions with a facilitator. The event takes place 7/21, Mental Health is the topic, if interested sign up is on the library website.
