Pickle ball courts are coming to
Mount Horeb's Viking park!

Svetlana: glad to see us again because she had been away while husband Brian had 3 surgeries and she is happy about exhibitions of her artwork.

 

News: last week we had an exciting meeting with voting in our 2 new members Faye Johnson and Jeremy Wright.

Paul: we anticipate being at Spring Garden with a chance at Culver’s. Will send a reminder to us.

Susan Smith: needs a place to with a video screen on our meeting coming up on 10/25th.

 

Heidi:

Grants had a meeting Monday morning and are currently accepting grants from now to March 31st.

Committee ideas needed for potential groups needing our help or international groups needing help.

 

Peggy:

Karla’s update. She’s doing well at at school, favorite is British Literature. Homing coming Saturday. Went to hockey game on Sunday with her second host family, new haircut.

 

Todd Gundlach and Chris Pfahler,  from Mount Horeb Pickle Ball club.

 

Pickle ball is the fastest growing sport in the country. It started in 1965 in a Seattle back yard as a family game hitting a ball over a rope. It is named after a family’s pet, Pickles. This is an unverified story.

 

Locally 3 years ago the club started working with the village. We need courts in town, other communities already have courts. Viking park is a  joint venture between school district and the village. Located off Lincoln street, courts were built at existing tennis courts. Recent renovation has created 6 pickle ball courts. Funds were collected by the group who raised  $24 out of $30k. They are looking to get some support. Businesses, frolic, and individuals have helped with fund raising.

The group will continue to raise money for court numbers, benches, wind screens and other enhancements.

Court resurfacing and painting is completed. Next up the courts need to be inspected, and nets will be installed.
 

Pickle ball differs from tennis in that the ball bounces less, and travels much shorter. Chris coached  and played tennis, had surgery, and needed to back off running on court.

His tennis skills did not translate from pickle ball when he picked up the sport. It is family friendly because 3 generations can play together. The smaller court brings in more participation across age groups and does not discriminate with age, or sex.
 

So far the club has 250 on email list, roughly 100 are players. 100 email new addresses were added to the club’s mailing list during the Art Fair due to interest in the sport.

 

Scoring only occurs during the serve. Play to 11 points win by 2. Side out serving, like volleyball a while ago.

As the match unfolds, the serve goes from side to side.

 

The start of the club’s program scheduled to start in April next year. There may be Saturday morning sessions. Mt. Horeb PE students have played pickle ball in the gym for years.
